Easy Dosing Delivers Award
Tyco Healthcare's system for orally delivering precise doses of morphine has won top honors in the drug category of the National Association of Container Distributors' annual awards program. Provided by distributor Continental Packaging Solutions, the package was designed to adhere to medical staff requirements for oral-narcotic dosage systems.
Designed for use in hospitals and hospices, the package was developed to meet FDA regulations surrounding the dispensing of controlled substances. The system includes a tamper-evident system created through the proprietary neck finish of the bottle as well as an oral syringe. Product can only be dispensed by inverting the package. Even after the tamper-evident seal is removed and a plug is inserted, the child-resistant closure cap can still be used for safety.
The graduations on bottles are measured precisely so medical staff can accurately catalog usage of controlled substances. All components are sized to fit into a patient's cubby. White was chosen for a sanitary appearance. For full article click here.

Continental Introduces PE Laminate Tubes
Continental Packaging Solutions introduced the newest addition to their line of tubes, the PE Laminate Tube.
The tube is constructed with alternating layers of PE and other resins to produce a packaging solution with greater barrier properties than LDPE. PE Laminate Tubes are environmentally friendly, too: they're fully recyclable.
For even greater barrier properties, the tubes can be lined with EVOH (Ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer). EVOH is an excellent barrier resin for use in food and nonfood packaging applications, and its oxygen barrier helps keep air contamination away, protecting your product.
Print quality is sharper than ever using PE Laminate Tubes, and recent technology has helped create a less visible seam. Decoration options include 4 color process printing, PMS specific spot colors, and gloss or matte coating, with extraordinary color clarity.

The Gold Award-winning entry came in the form of a Narcotic Oral Dosage System designed to administer medication to terminally-ill hospice patients. The entire system is shrink-wrapped to run in current assembly and filling lines.
In the food category, the company received the Bronze Award for their line of food oil bottles. The private mold, made for a producer of ethnic foods, combined traditional styling with ergonomic improvements that make it simple to be held by a hand feverishly cooking in the kitchen.

Green Packaging
Continental Packaging Solutions has introduced 'green' packaging in the form of PLA. Polylactic acid (PLA) is a corn-based material that can be turned into compost at commercial composting facilities. The metamorphosis from bottle to earth-friendly compost is completed in less than 12 weeks.
Scrupulous packagers have been clamoring for environmentally sensitive plastic substitutes since the harmful effects of certain resins were first known.
A number of design options are available as well. PLA not only holds the same appearance as PET, but it can be run in the same molds, and works in thermoforming and injection molding processes. There is no need for new tooling to accommodate this technology.
PLA is ideal for oil-based products, short-shelf-life dairy products, juice, and water bottles, as well as trays for deli meats, salads, and single-serve meals. In addition, Continental offers makeup compacts made from PLA, showing the true versatility of this material.

A High-End Look Plus Traditional Filling
A Continental Packaging Solutions (Chicago) customer launching a new high-end men's skin cream needed to strike a balance. The chemical makeup of its product dictated traditional filling, while the company's high-end image required dosed, airless dispensing. 'It was interesting that the company had to go in both directions,' says Continental business development manager Robb Zurek.
The solution was the Continental Airless Pump System, which can be easily filled using conventional equipment. The airless pump can be actuated with a fingertip and offers a standard product output. 'The pump enforced the image the company was trying to build as a brand,' says Zurek. 'This is part of the image that they've crafted very carefully.' The system also includes a friction-free overcap closure, which was necessary because the product's relatively small container can be difficult to grip.
